Using the five senses to observe, introduce children to inquiry

 

October Using science tools to observe the world around us(hand lens, balance, unifix cubes to measure length)
November Plants, describing the difference between grass, trees, and shrubs. Describing what plants need to survive and how they grow and change.
December Matter, states of matter(solids and liquids), children will describe and differentiate matter.
January Matter, describe matter by color, texture, position, weight, composition(metal, wood, rubber), and observe how matter can change.
February Earth, what is life on earth, where do the animals live, animals in the sea, animals on land.
March  Earth, what is the land made of, what is water like, how can we take care of the earth? This prepares students for Earth Day in April.
April What is living or nonliving, classify and describe what is living/non-living.
May  Animals, describing their size, shape, body parts, body coverings.  What do animals need to survive and thrive.
June Animals, how they grow and change, what are their life cycles like, what kinds of traits do they inherit.
